Fifth Annual Diversity
Memphis Walk Planned
Diversity Memphis has
announced a new partner for its fifth-annual
Diversity Memphis Walks, to be held
Sunday, September 19. The WDIA Goodwill Fund and
Diversity Memphis are stepping out together to
promote tolerance and brotherhood throughout the
community. This joint effort will showcase the
strengths of both organizations and highlight
the importance of partnering with like-minded
organizations. The Walk will start and end at
The National Civil Rights Museum in downtown
Memphis.
Diversity Memphis Walks funds
educational programs designed to break down
stereotypes and provide leadership skills for an
increasingly diverse society.
Serving as Media co-chairs for
the walk this year are Joe Birch, WMC-TV anchor
and Bev Johnson of WDIA. Birch is a former
Diversity Memphis Humanitarian Award honoree and
member of the Diversity Memphis Hall of Fame.
Families, clubs, schools,
youth and religious groups, civic organizations,
and corporate teams will be participating. The
Walk will be 5 kilometers (about 3 miles)
through downtown Memphis. Multi-cultural
entertainment will take place before and after
the Walk, headlined by Los Cantadores, Memphis'
renowned mariachi band.
Among the familiar faces at
this year's walk will be Chuck Scruggs of WKNO,
better known to young Memphians as Mr. Chuck.
"In Memphis," noted Scruggs, a Diversity Memphis
founder, "we work with people to develop
tolerance and respect for all people. Our
programs allow our community to celebrate their
commonalities, while learning to respect each
other's differences. Far too often, our
inter-group relations remain tense. It is a time
to walk together and to build a community where
all of our differences are welcome. The Goodwill
Fund and Diversity Memphis are leading the way"
Individuals or companies
interested in participating in Walk are asked to
call 901-405-9555. Walk registration is also
available online at
