Mission Statement

St. Mary's is a Catholic, parochial, co-educational elementary school, kindergarten through eighth grade, operated by St. Mary's Parish. Inspired by Christ's words, "I came that they may have life and have it to the full," we dedicate our apostolate to the education of the whole child - spiritually, emotionally, and physically - in a nurturing environment. Fully aware of the accelerating changes in society, we work diligently to set our students on an unending pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.

Tradition is defined as the passing down of doctrines, knowledge, practices and customs from one generation to another. Since 1878, St. Mary's School has built its future upon a solid foundation that preserves traditions while developing opportunities for growth designed to continuously improve the educational programs offered. St. Mary's has long been recognized for its faith-filled environment, academic excellence, dedicated teachers, strong student leadership, the well-mannered and disciplined behavior of its students, and an excellent relationship among students, faculty, parents and the community. St. Mary's School has been steadily growing both in educational opportunities and facilities, due to the strong commitment of the school's stakeholders.

St. Mary's School was originally located in downtown Jackson from 1878 until the move was made to the present location on the by-pass in 1970. The first classes of kindergarten through sixth grade were conducted in this building on January 5, 1970 with additional rooms dedicated later to provide for the rapidly growing population of St. Mary's Parish. Dominican Sisters and members of the parish and community staff the school. Presently there are two classes per grade level for Kindergarten through eighth grade.

As the student population and facilities have grown over the years, the educational program offered has been enhanced by upgrading the resources available to students. The full-time librarian oversees the Accelerated Reader program, which has proven to increase the reading skills and comprehension of our students. A part-time counselor provides instruction in the areas of self-esteem, conflict resolution, drug education, relationship skills, social skills and successful classroom attitudes and skills. Two resource teachers and a speech therapist from provide for more needed service to identified students. With the addition of the newest wing, the Science Lab joins the Computer Lab in offering the latest technology available to our teachers and students.

St. Mary's School continues to seek more opportunities for students to develop and express themselves outside of the regular curriculum.

For those who desire to stay after school to get homework help, a teacher monitors and assists students three afternoons a week. The non-competitive basketball for students Kindergarten through sixth grade involves 75% of students in those grades. The middle school competitive sports program operates under TMSAA. The wide range of sports offered for boys and girls gives many students the opportunity to compete for St. Mary's School.

Our SACS teams, curriculum coordinators, mentor teachers, parent boards and administration provide the desired leadership to ensure that St. Mary's plans for the future while maintaining the mission that has kept Christ as its center. This is the tradition of St. Mary's, to seek the new but not forsake the past.

Extracurricular activities, including Spanish Club, Science Olympiad, Math Counts, Forensics Camp Invention and Choir are available for the students.
