Jubilee Year 2025
The Catholic Church across the world is celebrating the Jubilee Year 2025, which officially began on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, with the Opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome and concludes on January 6, 2026, on the Feast of the Epiphany.
Rooted in the Old Testament, a Jubilee is a time of prayer, renewal, forgiveness, and acts of mercy. The Church celebrates a Jubilee every 25 years. The motto for this Jubilee Year 2025 is “Pilgrims of Hope.”
Churches and Shrines
Jubilee years also are a time when Catholics visit designated churches and shrines, recite special prayers, go to confession, and receive Communion to be provided an indulgence–which is a remission of the temporal punishment due for one’s sins. More than 35 million Pilgrims are expected to visit Holy sites in Rome from December 24, 2024, through January 6, 2026.
Spiritual Practices and Pious Visits
During the Jubilee Year 2025, all the faithful who fulfill the proper conditions will be able to obtain a plenary indulgence by participating in the following:
1. Undertake a Pious Pilgrimage – Group pilgrimages, not individual visits.
— In any Jubilee site by devoutly participating in Holy Mass.
— In Rome by visiting at least one of the four Major Basilicas:
Saint Peter’s in the Vatican
Saint John Lateran’s
Saint Mary Major’s
Saint Paul’s Outside the Walls
— In the Holy Land by visiting at least one of the three basilicas:
The Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem
The Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem
The Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth
2. Make a Pious Visit – The faithful can obtain the Jubilee Indulgence if, individually or in a group, they devoutly visit any Jubilee site and there, for a suitable period of time, engage in Eucharistic adoration and meditation (the Eucharist does not need to be exposed in the monstrance or ciborium for adoration), concluding with the Our Father, the Profession of Faith in any legitimate form (Nicene Creed or Apostles Creed), and invocations to Mary, the Mother of God. The Jubilee Year 2025 Prayer may conclude the whole pious exercise.

Jubilee Year 2025 Prayer
Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom. May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth, when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally. May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer throughout the earth. To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever. Amen.
