As many of you know, the Memphis Fire Department was alerted to our Mother Church, The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, early Sunday morning, May 31, by fire alarms at The Cathedral. Memphis firefighters discovered the location of the small fire and put it out immediately. Bill Hecht, our Diocese’s Director of Facilities and Risk Management, was contacted, and he and several clergy and employees at The Cathedral evaluated the situation.
Though it appears there was minimal damage by the accidental fire, there is a smell of smoke that remains. The building has been inspected and cleared by local authorities and our Diocesan safety leadership. However, for those who are attending the Friday Vespers and Saturday Ordination to the Priesthood of Deacon Chris Fagin and Deacon Felix Pesce, parishioners and guests are advised, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, to use discretion and take appropriate precautions when attending this weekend’s celebrations.
