Dominican Sister of Peace Joann Mascari, OP (89), a native of Memphis, Tennessee, died on October 2, 2019, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky.  Sr. Joann is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Dominican for 69 years, Sr. Joann earned a Bachelor of Arts in History/Education from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Masters of Art in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University (Chicago, IL).  She ministered as a teacher at St. Michael (Orland Park, IL); St. Anthony (Cedar Rapids, NE); St. Francis (Forrest City, AR); St. Bartholomew (Chicago, IL); and St. John Berchmans (Chicago, IL).  Sister was also principal/teacher at St. Louis Bertrand (Louisville, KY).  In 1972, Sr. Joann ministered in pastoral care to the sick and worked with adult education at St. Theresa and Holy Name in Memphis. TN.  In 1976, she was the area assistant in the Chicago, IL area for the former congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY.  While in this position, she also served as the coordinator of pastoral care at St. Nicholas Parish (Chicago, IL). In 1980, Sister became chaplain at St. Peter Manor (Memphis, TN).  Later, Sr. Joann went on to minister as pastoral associate at St. John Parish (Oxford, MS); St. Jerome Parish (Fancy Farm, KY); St. Denis Parish (Louisville, KY) and Christ the King (Southaven, MS).  In 1991, she served in the office of the New Dominican Life Program for the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY.  In 2000, Sr. Joann provided a ministry of centering prayer retreats and spiritual development in the Memphis, TN area.

In 2013, Sr. Joann moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence. 

Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Wednesday, October 9 at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, October 10, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel.  Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
