For over 150 years, St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen has been a pillar of compassion and service in the Memphis community. Operating six days a week, we provide more than 300 meals daily to individuals who are hungry, homeless, or in need of assistance. Rooted in the mission of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, we strive to serve with dignity, love, and faith.
Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Part-Time Soup Kitchen Assistant to support the daily operations of our kitchen. This role involves meal preparation, food transportation, volunteer coordination, inventory management, and sanitation. The ideal candidate will be organized, team-oriented, and passionate about serving others.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with preparing, cooking, and serving meals to those in need.
- Help create nutritious and balanced menus based on available food resources.
- Manage food collection, inventory, sorting, storage, and distribution.
- Ensure proper food safety and sanitation in compliance with health regulations.
- Oversee and support volunteers to ensure efficient kitchen operations.
- Purchase food and supplies following budget and financial policies.
- Assist with social media updates and email communications to promote outreach efforts.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of all food and kitchen supplies.
- Participate in fundraising and community outreach events as needed.
- Stay informed on food program laws and government regulations.
- Adhere to all Catholic Diocese of Memphis guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of the Soup Kitchen.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in large-scale food preparation is preferred.
- Prior experience supervising or coordinating volunteers is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Professional, positive attitude with a heart for service.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
Work Schedule
This part-time position requires flexible morning hours. Typical shifts are 6:00 AM – 10:30 AM, four days a week, with occasional additional hours as needed.
