Catholic Diocese Turns 50 with Anniversary Masses May 26 -27

Today, Jan. 6, 2021, marks the 50th year of our local Church of West Tennessee. The Catholic Diocese of Memphis came into being on this date today, in 1971. Let us thank God for all who have gone before us, as Ambassadors of Christ and His Church. We continue this work of God together, that all may be one. AMDG

Health & Safety

As previously communicated. our Memphis Diocese’s 50th Anniversary Committee, led by Vicar General Fr. Stewart, along with Bishop Talley, had scheduled Mass celebrations today, Jan. 6, at the Cathedral and tomorrow, Jan. 7, at St. Mary in Jackson to mark the start of our Diocese. However, due to the recent spike with the COVID-19 pandemic throughout our area and recognizing that our protocols would limit the number of people being able to attend these monumental celebrations, a decision was made to postpone Mass celebrations until Wed., May 26, 7pm, at the Cathedral, and Thurs., May 27, 7pm, at St. Mary in Jackson. By then, we hope and pray the COVID-19 numbers will have significantly decreased.

Looking Forward

Our year-long 50th Anniversary celebration began at the start of Advent this past Nov. 28-29 with special prayers recited at all Masses across our 47 Parishes and Missions in West Tennessee. During this New Year, there will be several events celebrating our 50th Anniversary, including Penance Services (March), Community Service Activities (June), Multi-Cultural Festivals (Aug.), Special Concerts (Nov.) and a Eucharistic Congress on Oct. 8-9 at the Renasant Center in downtown Memphis. Please see the attached calendar and schedule for specific dates and times.
