Eucharistic Congress, October 8-9, Recognizing Our Diocese’s 50th Anniversary

Another wonderful part of our Catholic Diocese of Memphis 50th Anniversary celebrations this year will be our Diocese’s first-ever “Eucharistic Congress” on Friday, October 8, 6pm-9pm, and Saturday, October 9, 9am-6pm, at the new Renasant Convention Center, Downtown Memphis.

What is a Eucharistic Congress?

A Eucharistic Congress is a beautiful gathering of thousands of clergy, religious, laity, communities, youth and many others in celebrating and showing devotion to our Lord’s real presence in the Holy Eucharist. All are invited! The two days of celebration and devotion are shown through Masses, speakers, discussions, confessions, adoration, music, youth and family activities and much more. It is a time of joy, fellowship, prayer and unity. A spiritual renewal with the Theme: That All May Be One (John 17:21)!

History of a Eucharistic Congress

The first formal Eucharistic Congress was held in Lille, France, in 1881. Since that time there have been more than 40 international Eucharistic Congresses with two of those in the U.S. (Chicago in 1926 and Philadelphia in 1976). Pope St. John Paul II attended the 1976 Philadelphia Eucharistic Congress. There also have been numerous local Eucharistic Congresses in Dioceses throughout the world over the years. Our Eucharistic Congress, marking our 50th Anniversary as a Diocese across West Tennessee, is our first. Again, with the Theme: That All May Be One (John 17:21)!
