November is Black Catholic History Month. The tradition began in 1990 when, inspired by the Feast Day of St. Martin de Porres (today, Nov. 3) and the birthday of St. Augustine, the U.S. National Black Clergy Caucus designated November for the celebration of the history and heritage of Black Catholics. While the two aforementioned Saints may be among the more quickly recognizable names in Black Catholic History, there are many more Black Catholic role models whose contributions have enriched the faithfulness of the Universal Church.
