November is Black Catholic History Month; Fr. Augustus Tolton

Many blessings! November is Black Catholic History Month.

On July 24, 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States designated November as Black Catholic History Month to celebrate the long history and proud heritage of Black Catholics.

In honor of Catholic Black History Month, our Memphis Diocese will share information on Black Catholics and their important contributions to the Catholic spiritual, intellectual traditions and social doctrines throughout the month.

Here’s the first to be recognized…Fr. Augustus Tolton (April 1, 1854-July 9, 1897), baptized Augustine Tolton, was the first Roman Catholic Priest in the United States. He was ordained in 1886. For more information on Fr. Tolton, go to: FrToltonBio.
