We mourn the passing of Brother Dominic Ehrmantraut, FSC

Brother Dominic Ehrmantraut (Frederic Eugene Ehrmantraut), FSC, died peacefully in his sleep this past Friday, July 10, early in the morning, at the Ave Maria Home, Bartlett, at age 83, having been a De La Salle Christian Brother for 63 years.

— Funeral Mass was this morning, Thursday, July 16, at our Diocese’s Mother Church, The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1695, Central Ave., Memphis.
— Burial followed at our Diocese’s Historic Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis.

• More on Brother Dominic
Brother Dominic was born on June 4, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo., and entered the Novitiate of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1963 in Winona, Minn. Brother Dominic was one of five children of Carl A. Ehrmantraut (d. 1962) and Cecilia M. Ehrmantraut-Trog (d. 2024). He is survived by his four sisters, Lynda, Denise, Karen and Sharon and two brothers, Wayne Ehrmantraut and Keith Ehrmantraut.

He graduated from Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minn., in 1963 and later that year entered the Novitiate of the Christian Brothers in Winona receiving the habit on August 30, 1963. In the fall of 1964 he traveled to Winona to begin his scholasticate training at St. Mary’s College. Brother Dominic received his Bachelor’s in English there in 1967. In 1972 he received his Masters in Theology from the University of Notre Dame and his Ed. S. in Administration from St. Thomas College in St. Paul in 1978. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from St. Mary’s University in 2006.

In 1968 Brother Dominic was assigned to Lourdes High School in Oshkosh, Wis., but the following year he moved to Chippewa Falls, Wis., to teach at McDonnel Catholic High School. In 1970 he was assigned to Archbishop Brady High School in West St. Paul. There he was named Dean of Students in 1971 and Principal in 1972. He remained at Brady until 1978 when Brother Dominic was named Principal at Pacelli High School in Stevens Point, Wis. He served at Pacelli until he was elected Visitor of the Winona District in 1983 serving in that post until 1991 when he was named Regional Coordinator for the USA & Toronto Region.

Brother Dominic went to Nairobi, Kenya in 1997 as Visitor of the new District and served in that post as Visitor and founder of the District of Lawanga until 2006 when he was named Director of the Lawanga District Scholasticate. He was on sabbatical in 2006-2007 at CTIE (Christ the Teacher Institute for Education) and was maned Principal in Tangaza, Kenya in 2007. He returned to the United States in 2009 and spent that year on sabbatical before accepting a position in the Development Office at Christian Brothers University, Memphis, in 2010.

Brother Dominic retired in 2024 in Memphis where he entered St. Luke’s Cottage for memory care at the Ave Marie Home.
